Lead the charge for change
Did you know that an estimated 130 million mobile phones will end up in U.S. landfills this year? And that those devices may contain toxic elements that could contaminate the land and water supply?
The ecoMobilization movement will examine how phones are made, used and disposed of to seek out new ways to reduce, neutralize or make positive impact on the environment.
It’s our way to help reduce wireless waste, so together we can contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment.

The goals of the program are to raise awareness about the ecological problems associated with e-waste, to motivate students into action and to give them the tools to act. Participating schools from coast to coast had five weeks to collect and recycle as many cell phones as possible to help reduce e-waste and earn sweet rewards.

Over the course of 30 days the LG ecoMobilization program collected thousands of phones. It was a close race, but Miami Palmetto Senior High School, located 10 miles south of Miami, Florida clinched the Grand Prize. In addition to earning $2 for every phone collected, they also received the $10,000 prize. The students are still deciding what to do with the prize money, but plan on sending a group of students to compete in the Envirothon, North America’s largest high school environmental education competition – and are looking into motion–sensor lights and conservation landscaping to help conserve energy and make their school more eco-friendly.
Not only that, but students received a private concert with top rock group, Boys Like Girls.
The LG ecoMobilization High School Cell Phone Recycling Program will be coming again Fall 2010.
